Hiking in Central Oregon

From tree-lined mountain trails to lakeside vistas to volcanic landscapes that look like something from a sci-fi movie, Central Oregon boasts some of the most diverse hiking in the country. There’s truly a trail for everyone, so which will you choose?

You’ll find several all-day treks into the Three Sisters Wilderness, or opt for a short stroll along the Deschutes River Trail. From the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Friday in September, Central Cascades Wilderness Permits will be required for day use hiking at many trailheads. Get more information here.

Want bragging rights for hoofing it up one of the few US volcanoes in the city limits? Pilot Butte State Park is calling your name, or catch more volcanic vistas with a visit to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument to scope out caves, waterfalls, and acres of glittering obsidian.

Do keep in mind that many Bend hikes are crazy-popular at certain times of the year, and parking lots can be packed. No space at the trailhead? That’s okay if you have a plan B. With hundreds of hikes to pick from, there’s no need to invent your own parking spot by pulling onto fragile forest floors. Just head a few miles down the road to find less-traveled trails.

Below are some great options to get you started. Download our Hiking and Camping Map to print and take with you, or stop by the Bend Visitor Center for more hiking ideas.
