Tennis & Pickleball

Tennis

Whether you’re looking to train with the pros to get ready for a tournament or play a casual doubles match with friends and family, playing tennis in Bend, Oregon, means having a ball at state-of-the-art facilities and improving your skills with top-notch instructors available for clinics or private lessons.

Eight public tennis courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis through Bend Parks and Recreation. Four outdoor tennis courts are nestled among the native conifers in Juniper Park, and there are two courts at Sylvan Park and Summit Park on Awbrey Butte. Bend Parks & Rec offers tennis lessons for adults throughout the summer season from USPTA-trained staff and youth lessons from April through June.

The courts at Central Oregon Community College are in a gorgeous setting with sweeping mountain views, but if these are full, Bend Senior High School, Summit High School, and Mountain View High School have public courts. For those looking to improve their game, several private clubs in the area offer instruction for non-members. The Athletic Club of Bend provides lessons, clinics, and drill sessions to non-members who sign up in advance.

Drop into Courtside Racquet Sports if you are looking for new equipment or need to have your racket restrung. The employees also have a wealth of information about local leagues, tournaments, and clinics.

Pickleball

OK, we’ll admit it sounds like a sport someone made up after too many stops on the Bend Ale Trail. But pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America.

So what is pickleball?

Played on a small space the size of a badminton court, pickleball uses a low net, just 34-inches at the center. It’s played with a perforated plastic baseball similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles. The game’s simplicity makes it easy for beginners of all ages, but it can also be a fast-paced game for competitive athletes.

There are plenty of spots to play pickleball in Bend, Oregon. Courts are popping up at traditional tennis venues like Broken Top, which has converted underused courts into Pickleball venues. Bend Parks & Rec and certain parks have facilities with new courts to accommodate the demand, like the 16-court complex at Pine Nursery Park. Pickleball Zone offers indoor courts, lessons, clinics, and a pro shop for members and non-members. Check out the Bend Pickleball Club website for a listing of places to play.
