The Bend Whitewater Park offers an exciting variety of river recreation opportunities, from wild rapids for experienced paddlers and surfers to more accessible runs for adventure-seeking novices. Located on the Deschutes River near the Old Mill District in Bend, you’ll find oodles of river recreation opportunities, including tubing, kayaking, and surfing.
The Whitewater Park is one of the premier manmade river-surfing waves in the country. It’s open daily from 5 am to 10 pm and can be surfed all year round. Even on a chilly winter day, you might see an adventurous surfer riding the wave while covered head to toe in thick neoprene.
Managed and owned by the Bend Parks and Recreation District, there are four wave features, 26 inflatable bladders that control the flow and change the shape and size of the waves, and three distinct channels:
- The Fishladder – This channel is the perfect option if you want to toss in a few moderate rapids on your float. For those who want to keep it mellow or have small kiddos, you can easily exit the river and take a short walk to McKay Park. From there, hop back in and continue down the river.
- Whitewater Channel – This is the most challenging channel for surfers, kayakers, and paddleboarders. You’ll find four wave features, from Eddy’s Wave, which is designed for and should only be attempted by expert river riders, to Jason’s Wave, which is great for beginners looking for a few thrills.
- Habitat Channel – Designed to protect and enhance river health and provide a habitat to essential local and migratory wildlife. This channel is off-limits to people, and pets, because it’s an ecologically sensitive area. Learn more about River Stewardship.
Always treat whitewater with respect. There’s a certain level of risk of entrapment, injuries, or even death that comes with recreating in whitewater. And our park is no exception. To lower your risk, come prepared with the right gear, plan ahead, and know the rules.
A few rules and safety tips:
- Dress for success. Children 12 years and under are required by state law to wear a life jacket. Wear footwear that’s comfortable for walking and secure so it stays on your feet.
- Know before you go. Consider your and your kiddos, abilities before entering the river, and always keep little ones under supervision.
- Save the beer for the brewery. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are not allowed in the parks, parking lots, or river.
